Education

Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CIAC), founded in 1948, is located on the scenic shore of Nanhu Lake in Changchun. It is a comprehensive chemistry research institution integrating basic research, applied research, and high-tech innovative research, enjoying high prestige and influence both at home and abroad. The institute currently has 835 employees and over 70 graduate supervisors, including 4 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 Fellows of the Third World Academy of Sciences, 7 recipients of the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Program, and 19 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In addition, 2 research teams have been designated as "Creative Research Groups" by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The disciplinary fields at CIAC encompass polymer chemistry and physics, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and organic chemistry. The institute is home to national-level research bases and platforms including the State Key Laboratory of Polymer Physics and Chemistry, the State Key Laboratory of Electroanalytical Chemistry, the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Rare Earth Materials and Efficient Utilization (under preparation), and the National Electrochemistry and Spectroscopy Research and Analysis Center. Research efforts primarily emphasize the disciplinary areas of distinct strength — polymer chemistry and physics, rare earth chemistry and physics, and electroanalytical chemistry — along with their integrated applications. Focusing on the fields of resources, environment, and advanced materials, CIAC prioritizes the development of carbon dioxide resources, corn resources, and rare earth resources, with a strong emphasis on advanced structural materials, advanced composite materials, and advanced functional materials.

Over the past 50-plus years since its founding, CIAC has achieved more than 1,200 scientific and technological accomplishments, including nearly 500 major breakthroughs. The institute has received over 70 national-level awards and more than 300 CAS and provincial/ministerial-level awards. It has filed over 1,000 domestic and international patent applications, with more than 600 granted, and published over 10,000 academic papers. The number of publications, SCI-indexed papers, and citations has consistently ranked among the top three national research institutions.

CIAC is one of the first institutions authorized by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee to train doctoral and master's students and establish postdoctoral research stations. In 1996, it was approved by CAS as one of the first batch of key doctoral training bases, enjoying doctoral degree-granting authority in the first-level discipline of Chemistry and five second-level disciplines. Since 1981, the institute has trained and graduated over 1,300 professionals, more than 50% of whom pursued further studies abroad after obtaining their degrees. Over 100 graduate students have received various CAS graduate scholarships, and 6 dissertations have been selected for the National Top 100 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations, ranking among the best in CAS. The institute currently has 720 enrolled graduate students, including 465 doctoral candidates.

CIAC not only boasts a long history, advanced research equipment, and world-class laboratories, but also upholds excellent academic traditions and a rich scholarly atmosphere. The Graduate Education Building, completed and put into use in 2004 with a total area of 18,400 square meters, integrates office, education, residential, and recreational facilities with state-of-the-art infrastructure, further providing graduate students with a first-class learning and living environment.

CIAC serves as a pivotal scientific research base in China, a new starting point for students on their journey to success, a hall for ambitious young people pursuing science and new technologies, and a cradle for China's future high-caliber talent.
