    WABIOS Scholar Visits CIAC

On October 22, Dr. Hiromi Sakai from Waseda Bioscience Research Institute in Singapore (WABIOS) visited Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, and delivered a lecture entitled Hemoglobin-Vesicles as Oxygen Carriers for Versatile Clinical Applicationsduring his visit.

In his lecture, Dr. Sakai introduced his research on hemoglobin-vesicles (HbV), which are artificial oxygen carriers that mimic the cellular structure of red blood cells to replace the blood transfusion. He pointed out the advantages of HbV, and concluded that HbV has a variety of potential applications not only as a transfusion alternative but also as an oxygen or CO therapeutic fluid that cannot be attained by the present RBC transfusion.

Dr. Hiromi Sakai received PhDin polymer chemistry in 1994 from Waseda University. From 1996 to 1998, sponsored by JSPS overseas fellow scholarship, Dr. Sakai studied at University of California, San Diego, and embarked on research on polymer chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, and medicine. Dr. Sakai was a Lecturer and an Associate Professor at Research Institute for Science and Engineering of Waseda University from 1998 to 2009. Now He is a Principal Investigator and Associate Professor at Waseda Bioscience Research Institute in Singapore. He has over 150 publications in academic journals and books.
